The Beauty and Freedom of Hair Locking

Her locs were groomed, styled, and colored by Goldie

Locs are one of the oldest hairstyles known to man . In my opinion, African locs are one of the most beautiful adornments created by black people on the African continent and diaspora. Locs are more than just a style, but sacred tendrils that carry energy and vibrations.

                                                       Starter locs created by Goldie

There are several methods to start locs. Comb coils(pictured above) are great for starting locs on short to medium length hair. This method is achieved by twisting natural hair with locking gel and a barber's or rat tail comb. Comb coils are delicate in the beginning stages. To keep them in place, one must avoid excess moisture and oil until next appointment with their loctician.

Another method that can be used to start locs is the two-strand twists. They can be achieved by taking two sections of hair and over-lapping them until you reach the ends of the hair. Two strand twists are perfect for starting locks on medium to long length hair. They are not as delicate as comb coils and can be exposed to moisture and oil.

An individual's hair can take between 4-6 months to completely lock depending on the texture of one's hair. Please have patience and don't compare your locs to another person's locs. No two head of locs will be the same. When starting your locs, make sure you are your loctican have a complete understanding of the look you are trying to achieve with your locs.

Have no fear! Just because you have locs doesn't mean that your style options are limited. A skilled loctican can create a vast amout of styles regardless of length.
